Join the Military

5 Reasons to Join the Military Now!

March 04, 2012 | Marco O'Brien

Joining the military just makes sense for some people, others seem to struggle with the decision. There are many reasons to join the military.  I have listed only a few.

Here are 5 reasons I believe joining the military makes sense.

Reason 1 - The Job Market - Although the job market has improved somewhat in the past couple of years, it definitely isn’t what it used to be.  What does this mean for you? It means there are going to be many more unemployed individuals looking for a job, many of these job seekers have something you don’t, experience!  You will be competing right alongside job applicants with years of experience, who do you think will get hired?

  • Solution – Not only is the military hiring but the military is actually increasing its numbers over the next several years. Each branch of the service is hiring more individuals this year than it did last year. No experience is necessary and all entry-level jobs com with great pay and benefits!

Reason 2- Rising Cost of College – College costs are at an all time high right now and continue to climb, which means two things, either you obtain tens of thousands of dollars in student loans to get your degree and start out in a financial hole or you spend the family inheritance to get your degree.

  • Solution – The Military’s Tuition assistance program pays  up to 100% of the first $4500 each year of your tuition costs while serving on active duty. In addition there is the MGIB and the Post 9/11 G.I Bill for more information follow this link http://www.military.com/education.  In addition each service has unique programs to help pay for the costs of education.

Reason 3 - Health Care – The costs of health care have skyrocketed over the past several years making it almost unobtainable for the average American.  Having no health care can be very stressful, even more so if you have a family with no coverage.

  • Solution - The military has a great health care plan for individuals and families. How about full coverage with little or no costs to service members or their families. Top-notch health care for free, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Reason 4 - You want to own a home someday! - Getting approved for home loans or college tuition has become increasingly harder. Getting approved for other loans, for cars, boats, motorcycles, ect., isn’t much easier these days either.

  • Solution - Military service men and women have a unique avenue to obtain home loans through the Veteran’s Administration.  Also lenders generally will extend credit to military members for other loans because of the job stability and guaranteed pay the military member has.  There are also many other Veteran’s benefits follow this link to learn more about these http://www.military.com/benefits/veteran-benefits

Reason 5 - You aren’t getting any younger! – I have heard countless times somebody tell me that they wished they would have joined the military right out of high school. Why? Because they could have retired young.

  • Solution – Join Now! – If you enter active duty at the age of 18 you can be retired from the military at age 38. Don’t be one of those people who look back and regret not joining when they were young.

The hardest part is making the decision to join.  Once you realize that the military fulfills all your needs and then some, the next step is to contact a recruiter.

We would love to hear about the reason you joined!

im 21 interested in joining the army

    • Lt Col Coral says:

Susan…talk to a recruiter…go in with an open mind and know what you are trying to accomplish with service, i.e. career, job skills, education, etc. think about what you like and dislike before deciding on a particular branch. Ask yourself questions to determine which branch would fit your personality, desires, and aspirations.

Good luck…and ask any questions you'd like!

      • Texan21 says:

I’m also 21 and wanting to join the Air Force. I haven’t had a job in two years and also no schooling since graduating high school. Will there be a problem for me? Is it something I should worry about?

    • Rachelle says:

      Me to

  17. emoryv67 says:

I enlisted in the USAF after I completed High School in 1952. Never in my born days did I beleive I would serve over 27 years. Would I do it again if I had the chance. You bet. There were times that I wished I had got out.Especially when you had these assignment. Thule, Greeland and Vietnam 2 times. But you stick it out because I did have some good assignments. I had what you call 3 brats "kids" while I was in the Air Force. So they were some bad times and a lot of happy times. One thing about the Military you will never get rich. CMSGT USAF RETIRED

    • Ash23 says:

Really I don't know my dads a brick mason and he was building half a million dollar homes for military families some that were newly build already had military families living in them already and he told us how they would when he and workers took breaks invite them over lunch, must be nice. They were mostly retired though.

    • Janiel Gooden says:

      why won't you get rich?

  18. Donlyn says:

I am not sure if I want to join but its always in the back of my mind.

    • Fernando Perez says:

You should definitely go talk to a recruiter if it’s always in the back of your mind. It was the same for me and I finally entered a recruiters office and got the information I wanted to know and decided to actually enlist.

  19. luis says:

im only 26 and dont know what military branch i should join. Im thinking to join and be a marine or just join the national guard.

    • David says:

marines are cool, GO FOR DEPLOYMENT!!!…so go for infantry (lol thats all i know)…money's tight (dont get rounds when your on security in some unknown country) and to top it off i got a bloody plate carrier (heck yea, nothing screams good luck like the previous owner obviously not having the best time in his life with this thing). chinese field days (you'll understand once you get in, that it literally has nothing to do with anything even remotely chinese). can't be in ur coffin racks between 0800 and 1600, but there's no where to go on the ship. 1st sgt asking your squad leader whose asking your fire team leader, whose screaming at you abt why in god's great name is there trash in your trash can in ur barracks room, which btw is currently being shared with two other pfc's and one private (and people really wonder why there are so many dependa-potumas?).A dependapotamus is referred to as a girl (sorry ladies, i love you, but…) who doesn't look the best- or anywhere close to it-and is pregnant or married- or both- and living off the hard earned benefits of us military folks, with her not giving one penny to the income of the household, because she roped her a military man like were her life line (and we are) and half the time she has another military man on the side (because hubbies kinda let himself go since the wifey wont cook, but hey, there's always mc donalds) who may or may not be the actual father of that baby shes carrying…and usually theres so much drama in the mix BUT this whole time the not-so-faithful (or aren't we waay too busy to be doing anything else, right?) hubby (srry, bros, but…) doesnt even know anything, and i mean anything thats going on at home. screaming at the top of your lungs, "BUTTER BUTTER JAAAM!!!" as you say in your head "I'm up, he sees me, im down", or just running then diving behind a bush or some kind of small little hill. running in the open dessert, freakin exhausted because this will be the 4th time, count 'em, fourth time u did this range in 2 days (one night run, one day run/ day, and not one actual shot was fired any of those days,or three days before that) and each run is a kilometer long and the whole time ur screaming some rediculous thing to take place of real rnds (see above as an example-butter butter jam), ur carrying a real gun (light machine gun was in the stars for me), real plates which weights arnd 20-40 lbs. depending on your size (which is dictated to u by ur team leader btw because who knows who medium fits), you got a day pack on filled with real weight (100 rnds 5.56= abt 5 lbs times 12=60 lbs. because this isn't freaking WW2 and noone is a freakin ammo bearer lol and instead of real ammo, they give u ammo cans filled with sand, freaking awesome, because you train as you fight) and ur really sweaty, really dirty, and for some reason u managed to smash ur tooth into the top of ur gun (effectively chipping it lol), but noone cares (including yourself), because to top it all off its all abt mission accomplishment, you know it, they know it, we know it…and everyone cares even less abt the freakin mission, unless your not getting any missions lol. All you really want to do is stop moving, throw that darn hunk of metal called a gun some place even god cant find it (especially if your carrying a medium machine gun), not necessarily eat, because MRE'S are worse than just getting sick off the locals food for two weeks while ur bodies "adjust" to the hairy pig and the eyeless goat, and sleep the deployment away…with that im shutting up on this topic "YUUUT!!!!"

  20. Jeff McKevitt says:

'''I joined USMC in 1971 @17yrs old. If you are in your 20's out in one tour. Got out 1975. Wife worried abt parents being to old, her mom passed at 75 and her dad is still kicking at 84. I was in the marines in boot camp. A Navy man enlisted at 25 yrs old and built like a body builder. The guy performed well after 6 yrs previous duty and the only way he made it thru the last physical fitness test for the 3 mile run, I halfway carried him the last 300 yards to the finish line. That is partially what the Marines is about. Good luck if you go thru bootcamp at that age. He was in better shape muscled up and all, but his Stamina was not what it is in your teen years. Good Luck. My Grandson has recently signed up for the Marine Corps. I am proud as I can be, but will be worried about him every day. My wife and I have raised him from birth and I could not love him more if he was my son, but having said that I supose I can claim him as a son anyway. Semprr Fi!! and good luck. Jeff Mckevitt, Cpl on discharge from active duty.

  21. Lt Col Coral says:

Luis…depends on what you want to do in the service and out of service. Are you planning to make the service a career? Are you very physically fit? do you enjoy manual labor, office environments, airplanes, etc, etc.
It really comes down to your desires…as for the Guard, that, too, depends on your desire to serve full- or part-time. The Guard commitment is less than active, but you can usually live where you want and serve, whereas the active force will move you around a bit. Either way, you'll get educational benefits among other benefits. I would spend time talking to each service recruiter…I'm Air Force, so I'm biased, but if you're looking for tip of the spear type jobs and boots on the ground work, the AF has limited opportunities for that type of work. If you're interested in working on planes (engine, mechanical, electrical, or otherwise) or office types of work Air Force (and to an extent, Navy) is the service you'd lean to.

BTW, you need to act fast since the services have age limitations! Anything is waiverable, but you stand a better chance to get in without a waiver!

    Good luck!

  22. amadou deh says:

i don't know which branch i want to joined right now

  23. Anthony Bell says:

I’m 18 years old fresh out of high school. I’m looking to join. My dad is a veteran he served in the us army and the us army reserves. My grandpa was a hero. I want to carry on the name. I will be a 3rd generation hero.

  24. steven says:

I want to joint but dont know which branch I would like to work with computer which branch is the best. 25 years old

  25. paulette says:

im 18 and i am a female i want to join the army i have my mind set on the army no changing but im afraid im to small to join and its something i really want to do

  26. Levi says:

Im 16, I want to join the army. I dont see myself doing anything else. I messed up with drugs in school so I’m clean now and after high school I’d like to join, any suggestions?

  27. rlamarb says:

i spent 17 yrs as a recruiter and still after all these years i believe that the #1 reason any one joins the military is service. wether to country , fellow man, we are givers , every thing else is just candy.

  28. Zela says:

I'm currently going through the process For joining the army. I'm 24 Jamaican, a mom n I'm married. I work part time and go to school full time and my husband has been unemployed the pass 5 months circumstances beyond our control. Ends that used to be met by the money my husband used to make along with the little I make , are no longer being met. I've received an eviction notice. The next best thing is public assistance but it's not an option for me.
I've always wanted to be apart of something with a purpose and I've always wanted to do my part in what ever I could. Thought about being a cop but I thought I wasn't cut out for it. However my situation has my back against the wall n I refuse to give up and I know my husband would do anything for us…so I decided to make a big move for us. I decided to join the US Army.
I was scared to say it to my husband but when I realized we were really at our ends I just blurted it out one night " wat u think bout me joinin the army" he said " babe if u wanna do it I'll support you" I know it's not wat he wants but he doesn't want to discourage me.
He said the hardest part you already did, you made the decision to join. So just go do it and be the best you can. And so……I should be going to MEPS in a week or so.
I dnt know what will become of me but I will do my best and I'll be grateful and happy when my family is taking part in all that the US Army has to offer.

    • John says:

I wish you the best. Like your husband said you have completed the hardest part in just saying you want to join. Make the most of it. People do no realize the opportunities that present themselves when you join the military. I was in the Air Force and Army myself and found I had more control of my career. Maybe your husband should do the same and join with you. Talk to you recruiter about it. The possibilities are unlimited. Also remember if you don't ask they will not tell so figure out what you want and go get it

      • denise says:

you are a mature, brave young women. that being said, i was in the
army , army reserves and naval reserves. if i was you would join
the air force or air force reserves. housing is better. deployments
most the time is shorter. and from what i notice from family members
in af, they take care of their people really well. also , your first enlistment
i would get into something simple, cook, driver, etc. that way your
tech school will be easier. from what i heard some troops that can't
pass their tech school or AIT, sometimes are let go. then when time
for re-up you can hopefullyl choice another rate, mos, or job. however,
don't let anything stop you from yor dream!!!!

  46. Kyle says:

Hey, my name is Kyle. I’ve been treading through sites and found nothing but strictly to the book people who will copy and paste the answer I’m looking for. So my dream since I was 6 was to be in the army(I’m currently 19 about to be 20) I tried joining the day I got out of high school. Everything was going great, until I got to the audiology portion. I’m deaf in my left ear, yes, I did know. I’ve been fighting for a waiver for about 1 year now to allow me to get in there. Any ideas on ways to actually obtaining a waiver? I don’t want to be flagged as a jumper but i also hear you just have to find a recruiter willing to fight for you. As for the rest of you joining, good luck on your endeavors, I wish you all the best of luck and fight through it all.

I just turned 26 yrs old Nov. 5th I am a female and have always wanted to be apart of the Airforce or the National Gaurd. I used to have A LOT of recuters contacting me after I had graduated from High school and took my ASFAB test. I had been discuraged by my family not to go into the military but it is something I have always wanted to persue. Now that I havn't brought it up with my family for about 5 yrs and NOT wanting to ask them agian. I would like to know if it is to late for me to join considering my age?

    • Shannon says:

Its not too late. You're 26, not under your parents control anymore. If you really want to serve this country, do it! You dont need their permission, darlin. I am a female too and i think we need more of us girls out there!

  53. Shannon says:

Hi there! I'm Shannon and i'm in highschool at 14. I'm considering joining the military someday and i'm thinking possibly the Marines or the Air Force. I have been a 4.0 student since the 6th grade and i'm wondering if grades matter to get in. I've been in martial arts for 10 years now in brazilian jujitzu and kenpo karate. I know it's a long ways away, but I have my heart set on this. I want to prove that I can do it for the women who have been discriminated against. Would I stand a chance? Please comment or email me at shannon.odell99@yahoo.com

  54. Rob says:

I'm 17, turning 18 soon, and graduating from High school this coming June. I am not sure what I want to do with my future, and i believe the only thing keeping me from signing up immediately to the military is the face of trying to raise a family while I am serving. I don't want to have to make them move and make it so they can only see me for only one or two days a year…

  55. Dirk says:

ok so im 28 and i really concidering join a military branch,,,i fought this erge for way to long being tht i come frm a military background and family.. the ? i hae is wht brance shld i join and who will allow me at the age of 28???ive never commited any crimes i have no records, no drugs, played college ball..can some one help me?

  56. Angie says:

I've been thinking of joining the military, Im just so undecided with what branch to go to, which is better Coast Guard or National Guard ?

    • T.M.T says:

Air Force is good or National Guard but it always depends on what type of job you want so decide that first then decided what branch of the military to join. Another idea would be to take the test and see what you qualify for then you will be able to determine what job and what branch doing this would make it easier and this allows you to see if you will receive bonuses with the job you qualify for and even with signing on as reserved they usually have good bonuses but it depends. Right now they are not giving out bonuses so you would have to check up on that if you are interested in getting one.

  57. Lani says:

Ive been wanting to join, never looked into what branch would fit me the most. Now that im a unemployed female at 24, the military is looking pretty good right now. However, i dont think im physically fit for boot camp and all that.

    • Melo says:

You have to do whats best for you i have also been debating on joining or not for awhile so I understand. Just remember that you can join and prepare and make sure its really something you want and believe you should do before joining because there are a lot of people that join and don't know what they are getting themselves into. you still have time to decide the age limit for air is 27 and for the others it ranges from 27-35. Just look into to it some more and talk to people that are actually in the military and not just recruiters because they are not always going to tell you everything.

  58. Gio says:

I'm 18 and i REALLY want to join the military,i have always wanted to be a soldier and serve my country..I want to be an elite soldier i want to become a ranger…i been going to college for a semester and its cool and all but im not really interested in school, my parents want me to go to school and get a degree on something but i dont know what to study.I have a brother in the army 11B but he doesn't really have a soldier mind set i think he regrets joining, i have told him that i want to join but he tells me to go to school insteadand play soccer..another reason i havent join is because i want to play college soccer, im ok im not the best but i can play..i was suprise i didnt make the team for the school this year because i'm some what known in the area as being pretty good but i guess the coach didnt think so..what was funny was that the coach that cut me called my high school coach after the tryout to ask if where i was going to play lol.. what should i do make my dream come true of becoming a soldier or give soccer another shot next year

I believe you should go with what you feel is best for you. Remember you have plenty of time to join you are still young. The age limits are 17-27 for air and army and guard 35, navy 34, and marines 28, plus the coast guard 27. So your good try different things before you make your final decision. Plus do what will make you happy and be better for you.

    • Melonie says:

I have talked to some people that are in the army and they have told me that right now they are not giving out bonuses. If you receive one it would be because of the type of job you get into. Some jobs have good bonuses and if you sign on as reserved they usually get them. But first I would take the practice test or the real test and find out what jobs you qualify for and if by joining you get a one. I have a couple friends who joined and one of them got a bonus and the other one didn't. This bonus wasn't very much though and they probably won't see much of it after it goes through being taxed. Just to let you know there will be some cut backs on the military such as triage they may be taking that out as one of the benefits for the military. They say that family's abuse it but whats funny is people abuse welfare to so I believe it's silly. They are just trying to cut back on some of the funding that goes to the military. Which I believe there should be good benefits for police, firefighters, military, teachers and any other government jobs.
